Yeah for sure. Theres another Drupal one that is out, http://www.ubercart.org/. Not sure about it though.

Ross if you are looking for custom implementations I will definitely pass this on to a few software engineers. I'm guessing you are looking for a PHP implementatin?

I am waiting for a 1.0 version before I spend much time looking into Magento. Their website says "The current release is an early beta version of the product. We highly recommend not to use it in production environments."

Yeah I have looked into that as well. To be honest, working for an e-commerce company and also working with a large scale very expensive platform, Magento is offering every aspect that a client would need from multiple sites, to promotions and its all free with a kick ass if I might say one page checkout.

Since it is free the community will be huge so support should be good without having to pay. The only thing I worry about, is since its PHP based and open source the chances of exploits happening are larger and you will definitely have to keep up to date with the updates.

Dan,

I read about Magneto recently too - it looks to have some great features and functionality. Their site has some nice tutorial screencasts that I viewed earlier at:

Another option is TradingEye PHP shopping cart, which I looked at a few months ago. Not open source, but excellent features and support.

Not sure if this will work for you, but I recently found the best Open Source e-commerce solution.

http://www.magentocommerce.com/

has all the functionality of a major e-commerce application and can't wait to try it out. It is in beta but if you look at all the features you can't beat it.
